    Default White-tailed kite action

    Attached Images Attached Images

For many years I have been trying to capture interaction between white-tailed kites. Although I have some frames, there were mostly from too far and without the critical IQ. Today I was finally able to capture some frames that I like and will keep. Below in one frame I wanted to share, the top bird is an adult while the lower one is a juvenile, it is the only sequence with both adult and juvenile in one frame. These kites are extremely skittish and their small size makes them even more difficult to photograph in the wild.

Nikon D850, 600 F/4 E FL + TC14E-III. ISO 640, 1/3200sec at f/5.6 hand held. processed with Capture One Pro 11. Hope you like it as well

Beautiful Shot. I like everything about. Specially both eyes are well light and sharp.

    Dark Background add really well.

    Thanks for sharing.

Congratulations Arash this is outstanding, love the brilliant eyes and the dynamic poses. Was there any physical contact - did feathers fly??

Cracking encounter Arash, love the colour palette and the dark green backdrop really makes the subjects ping. How much of a crop is this or is it FF?

Thanks Jon, there were some bits of feathers in the BG which I cloned out. Got a couple of frames with wings touching will post later...

I just had a thought. If you were still shooting Canon you could have gotten sharp trees. But not sharp birds ...

Full marks for this shot - nothing wrong with individual bird shots, but when there is some fast interaction going on, then the shot is just so much more engaging. Well, to me at least!

    Hi Artie,

you are correct, but only 99.99%. I can't remember how many times I had this action (and even food exchange) happen in front of me, only problem was the 1DXII would spit out tack sharp trees with two nice white blubs! the kites fly up and down, and in out very erratically in a split second, there are only 2-3 shots at most when they are against color before soaring into a steep angle sky BG shot which then Canon will gracefully focus on... :)

Pretty amazing image.. Great looking flight poses. Lovely IQ. You did real good here to get the HA on the lower bird. You would think it would be looking directly at the other bird. Good work and TFS

Not a whole lot more to add to this one. Just so nice. I love the poses, the detail, and the nice BG. Of your white kite frames I think this may be my favorite one -- glad you were able to take advantage of the opportunity. TFS

Fantastic. Probably my favorite shot I've seen since joining this board a few months back.
