    Default Willet

Well, 10 days of forest fire smoke, 3 days of rain, and a move into another overpriced Bay Area apt (wifey works at Airbnb in SF) combined to crush shooting for the last 2 weeks.
I finally made it out today and caught the middle of the falling tide, my personal favorite.

Canon 600mm f/4 IS II on EOS 5D Mark IV
1/5000 at f/4, ISO 320. (f/4 for max BG blur)
Processed in LR CC. A bit of extra sharpening on the head. I also lightened the left/upper primaries a touch while darkening the lower. I just
wanted to even the brightness/exposure across the wings.

I can already hear Artie "2x3!!!" I was wed to the 2x3 vertical for years and have only recently started doing more in the 4x5 format. Landscape/horizontal
    is always 3x2 for me.

    Cheers!

Fantastic frame Dorian. Details and pose are top notch. Another real winner with the 5d4 and a shorebird in flight.

Excellent BIF shot Dorian, great detailed view of all of the dorsal surfaces on this bird. One of the strengths of this site is the quality of the BIF work, and this one is up there with it. Nice call to even out the brightness on the wings, and also to run at max aperture as the background details in the lower half may have been a bother otherwise. For me the 4x5 format seems to work fine with this one, perhaps 2x3 would have left too much space above and below the subject.

    Cheers, David

Sometimes a boxy crop is best. It works perfectly here. Surprise ... For topside detail, this is by far the finest Willet flight image I had ever seen. See the Square and Boxy Crops blog post here. That said I'd take just a bit off of the left. Just a bit. To my eyes the head does not look as sharp as the feathers on the back and wings. Is this from a horizontal original?

Yes, crop from horizontal. 10.5M of 30M pixels so ~33% of original frame. That mostly explains the comparative 'lack' of head detail. I realized it wasn't perfect (still about 9/10 in my book) but was willing to trade that final 10% of head sharpness for topside detail you mentioned. I've it's really rare to get a full topside bank at my spot......

Beautiful in flight frame. I love the BG pose and back details. The trailing feet are great too. I could see warming the frame up a bit but personal choice. TFS

Excellent dorsal BIF shot, with fabulous detail (slight fall-off of the head noted; still a 9). Exposure and bg lovely. 4x5 comp works well for me here, although I would have liked the shot just as well with a tad more on top.

nice shot Dorain, you got the excellent light and the nice bank position. HA is good but the frame just before this one with the head still slightly angled towards us would have been perfect, did you have more frames from this burst?

I agree with Artie that the sharpest focus is on the back, but it is easy to equalize it in post, I selected the head and applied some gentle SS. Also the colors should be a bit warmer for this location, I adjusted the WB, just small improvements on top of already a nice capture.

Repost is an improvement. What settings did you use for the SS of the head?
