These birds are quite difficult to photograph as they habitat deep into Caledonian pine forests in Speyside, the only place you find them in the UK, and even there they are rare. I went there at the weekend, to a place I know they hang out, where I found a clearance in the forest and hung out some feeders. Next morning I returned and found lots of Coal Tits, Blue Tits and Great Tits all feeding. But, no Crestys. After waiting for an hour this guy arrived and stayed for 10 mins. Light was limited, the winter sun didn't get high enough to clear the trees. First time I have put the 5D4 to test.

Nice Exposure. I like the colors. I might have added a little bit more brightness

I love the sharp eye and Diagonal Branch.

    Thanks for sharing.

Wonderful in every way Will, what a beauty and the 5D performed beautifully. Perch set up is wonderful, colors, IQ, SH, all top notch!

Love that perch. Great frame overall. Nice detail on the bird and very sharp. You'll love the 5D4. Killer background.

Overall spectacularly well done. Did you set up the perch or just the feeders? The bird is cracking beautiful and the subject is very sharp. Pose, HA, and the great view of the near foot are all perfect.

Great pose and great perch. Congrats on the work to get the shot. I just bought a 5d4 also and am getting it in 2 days. Can't wait to try it out. What are your initial impressions compared to your 1dx?

Hi Will, capture is perfect, colour palette is spot on for this location, with good detail. The location is not that forgiving in terms of light, so well done. As Artie said, was this a set up with feeders as these birds are very flighty and dam quick, might be with setting up with a remote too & the WA for a different perspective. Best of luck with the new addition, but be mindful of what we discussed and if you ned Canon's number let me know.

Happy snapping, btw you bump into Neil?

Beautiful Will - love it! This is a bird I have still not managed to either see or photograph, a super image.
One minor point some of the mosses look not just soft but fuzzy, anything to do with NR or sharpening ratios?

Hi Artie, thanks for that...I set up both, I found the branch laying nearby so broke it to fit onto a smaller branch on the pine tree, I should have said this when I mentioned the feeders. anyway the 'perch' is away with me for another day.

Thanks for that Isaac...I've never used the 5D4 long enough to get the 'feel' for it. My first thoughts were that it didn't have the same 'feel' as the 1DX, but I soon got used to it. I took over 500 shots of the tits at the set up, a lot were soft with motion blur. These birds move about very fast on the perches, and I felt that I would have more keepers with the 1DX. I was happy with the images I kept, even at ISO 3200, I felt that I could crop them more, if needed, without losing IQ. And, yes I really like the quality of the images produced by the 5D4 I also used it on a WA lens when photographing reindeer, and was very happy with the results...I posted one on the Wildlife Forum. I tried a few flight shots with Mallard flying towards me at sunset on the 500 and 3/4 of them were OOF. The ones that were in focus look real good. Perched birds(unless they are very flirty) - 5D4. BIF - 1DX.

My thoughts on the 5d IV. I relied on two of them while first my 1dx and then my 1DX II sat on the shelf for the most part. Because of the densely packed pixels, you will experience a bit more motion blur than with the 1DX or the 1DX II but at the same shutter speeds the differences will be small.

Thanks Jon, appreciated...They are difficult birds to photograph, but well worth the trip, if you fancy it. Probably to do with the sharpening, I did slightly sharpen some parts of the moss.

That is super interesting Artie. So do you think that you need to shoot with higher shutter speeds to get comparable results with the 5d4 because of the pixels? As a rule shoot one step faster than you would with the 1dx(2)?

nice image William, I like the perch pose and details. I'd slightly warm the colors.

Congrats on your new camera. The 5D4 works well for perched shots like this one and you did well here but it will fall short for BIF and action. The mirror mechanism in this body is not as as well damped as the 1D series so for the same shutter speed there is a higher chance of soft shots, that due the vibration induced by the mirror. You can reduce this by switching to "silent mode" but the continuous shooting speed will drop and the shutter lag will increase.

No rules, not guidelines. This effect was much more noticeable with the 5DS R. Just be sure to hold the lens as still as possible.

What a brilliant capture, William. Love the pose, perch, and beautiful overcast light. Super detail, and wonderful complimentary background.
