This image was created on October 25, 2018 at Snow Hill Island on the Emperor Penguin expedition with the Induro GIT 204/Mongoose M3.6-mounted Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR lens, the Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III, and my souped up Nikon D850. ISO 500. Matrix metering at about +1 stop: 1/250 sec. at f/9. NATURAL AUTO WB at 8:02am on a then cloudy morning.
Nikon Focus Peaking fine-tune value: -2. See the Nikon AF Fine-tune e-Guide here. One AF point below the center AF point Single AF Area Mode as originally framed was active at the moment of exposure. The selected AF point very slightly below and to the left of the bird’s left eye.

All comments welcome especially as to how you perceive the color balance for each of the images. To read about teleconverter strategies and see slightly different versions of the two images in this post, see the bog post here.

ps: which of the two images is the stronger? Why?

This image (of the same chick) was created on October 25, 2018 at Snow Hill Island on the Emperor Penguin expedition with the Induro GIT 204/Mongoose M3.6-mounted Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 500mm f/5.6E PF ED VR lens and my souped up Nikon D850. ISO 400. Matrix metering at about +1 stop: 1/1600 sec. at f/7.1. NATURAL AUTO WB at 8:16am on in almost sunny conditions. Nikon Focus Peaking fine-tune value: +2. See the Nikon AF Fine-tune e-Guide here. Two AF points below and one to the right of the center AF point Single AF Area Mode as originally framed was active at the moment of exposure. The selected AF point very on our right of the base of the bird’s open bill.

Made me chuckle, how wonderful to see these little ones and the unique poses. For me, image one takes the prize bc I am able to see the head/eyes in an engaging way. The pose of image two is endearing but i think the angle of the head/the eyes don't connect with me. I do like the slight shading of whites/grays throughout the penguin against the snow. We should be able to host some penguins here in the Northeast with the temperatures plummeting;9 degrees tonight! Happy Thanksgiving Artie.

The first one looks like it is just hanging out spread eagle style. The second one looks like it has fallen and can't get up. That one looks more blue than the other.

The first image works better for me. I like the eye contact, flight-like pose, exposure and composition. The second image looks like the penguin is having fun in the snow.

They both work well for their own reasons, but the first has more appeal to me as well - I love the raise head in that one!

not sure which one I like best...both are great. Excellent details in both whites and blacks.

I'd be pretty happy with either, but if I had to pick I'd go with the first one. Love the detail and the pose. Looks very relaxed. TFS
