I photographed this Yellow crowned Night Heron at St. George.

I found this new place which has gorgeous fall colors on the water with lot of ducks..

While I was photographing this guy came in and landed close to me. I had my 300 f/4 lens in my D850 and was able to take shot before Adult came in and flushed him...

Subject was in Shade with reflecting light coming from the water.

    Nikon D850, 300 f/4
    ISO 1600, f/5.6, 1/320 sec
    Manual Mode, Matrix Metering

    Post Processing:-
Capture 1 Pro and Photoshop CS6
    Cleaned distracting background twigs

    Hope you like it.

Let me know your thoughts and comments.

    Thanks

The colors on this image are really nice. Good direct stare as well. I do not like the stick in the foreground and I wish you were lower to the waters surface. The processing on the bird seems off to me and the bird is purplish instead of a dull brown. Also this is a Black-crowned Night Heron. Note the bi-colored lower beak and the large tear drop markings on the wings. Yellow-crowns have all black beaks and much smaller and thinner markings on them among other things.

I agree with the name, I incorrectly said it as Yellow Crown. This is Black Crown Night Heron. Can you update the Thread Name ?

Regarding the purplish. I remember there was strong Blue reflective light from the Pond, not sure if that was the cause.

    I will check it again

I added Saturation Adjustment and reduced blues, when I compare both I notice the difference.

    Does this look good ?

I fixed the name. The colors are still off. I think it is best to go back to the raw and try and remove as much of the color cast as possible. These are brownish and creamy tan birds are not purple or blue at all. Your heron looks neon almost.

Love the bird, the image, the sharpness, and the inquisitive pose. And the swirly gold BKGR is to die for. The colors look fine to me for this species. I see some mahogany tones in some of the feathers but nothing blue or purple. I'll have to remember to check this one out when I get my new monitor :)

Really like this one. The color in the background is phenomenal. Nice and sharp with a good pose.

Hello Krisna, great background color, but I agree with Isaac 100%, the bird's colors are way, way off. I can see purples, blues, grays and this bird has none of those colors. The brown colors on the back of the bird look close to the actual color, and you can probably use those as a guidance. I think is worth it to revisit the RAW file and fix the colors there. TFS.

I checked the RAW image and I could not correct the color casts.

If Anyone wants to try I am happy to give them the RAW image for Learning.

    Thanks
    Krishna

    Boys and Girls,

Let's not forget a few things:

1-The feathers on the backs of Purple Sandpiper rarely look purple. Yet in certain light conditions you can see the purple sheen.
2-Birds are not mass produced. There is lots of individual variation and diet can also affect the coloring of the feathers.

To my eye, the colors in both of Krishna's post look fine for juvenile Black-crowned Night-Heron.
