    Rock Shag head portrait

This image was created on Bleaker Island (OCT 26, 2015) on my first-ever land-based Falklands tour, with the Induro tripod/Mongoose M3.6 -mounted Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM lens, the Canon Extender EF 1.4X III, and the rugged professional body, the EOS 1D X now replaced by the Canon EOS-1D X II.ISO 640. Evaluative metering -2 1/3 stops: 1/200 sec. at f/6.3 in Manual mode. Cloudy WB.

One AF point above and two to the left of the center AF point/AI Servo Expand/Rear Focus AF as framed was active at the moment of exposure.

As for the image, don't be shy. All comments are welcome.

I like the alert pose and the gorgeous red patch around the eye (must be a name for it but I am going to have to plead ignorance). Lovely feather detail and the bird looks good against the black background. Is the tip of the bill slightly soft, or is it my failing eyesight? TFS

Very nice indeed, it's a pity the bill tip is OOF, otherwise very dramatic and a little different, I like it.

Yes the bill tip is sllghtly soft due to lack of d-o-f but the truth is that I could care less :) I would likely have had to go to ISO 2500 or more to see any difference at such close range ...

Killer frame Artie. I love everything about it from the fantastic details to the dramatic colors and the dark background.

Great portrait, the red and white feathers fit perfectly to the black background. The beak unfortunately has a slight blur. Too close?
