My first ever Barn Swallow and I had to look it up to identify. They were flitting all over very quickly, so when this one landed I was thrilled...it's a big crop, as mentioned earlier, I'm lusting after more glass.

    Canon 40D, Av f5.6. eval +1/3; 1/1000; ISO 640; 100-400l @ 400.

I wonder about leveling the board its on? And maybe just a tich more head turn your way? Hey I know they don't land long enough to get to picky most times:)

    Longer glass lust......only gets worse

Beautiful capture. Love the colors of these birds. I agree with Nonda about maybe leveling the board. Not much you can do about head position though.

I have been lusting longer glass since Christmas LOL it hasn't gotten better yet.

I wondered too about leveling but decided not. Let's see what feedback we get...and yes, at this point just happy to get the shot. Thanks for looking and commenting...

The eyes would find the corrected image more familiar, and the angle of the bird relative to the focal plane would be more noticeable. Perhaps the correction is not a must here.

hI katie - love the singing pose love the BG - Nice.

The angle doesnt bother me. I would run some NR on the BG only.

    :)
Bigger glass is good, but heavier and harder to lug around.

You did good, Katie, especially for a "first ever!!" Definitely a keeper until you get a better one!

Katie, I went ahead and leveled the board just to see which version we all like better.:)

I love your subject - you caught a great pose that could only be better if you had caught him looking right in the camera. Head angle is a big thing with birds so always try to capture their heads turned towards you so it looks like he's making eye contact.

Your DOF is a little shallow, too - the front wing and tail are a tiny bit OOF but you did a great job of getting the head and eye sharp and that's really important. :D

I agree with Jules here. You did EXCELLENT capturing this little fellow.
I would be happy as a pig in a mud hole if I took this shot.
The board being leveled does make it more enjoyable to look at but I must say....any capture of the illusive is better than no capture at all eh? You did well. And yes, the eye and head are in sharp focus.
