    Default Kinglet

    Hi all,

It was quite dark out by this point when I saw this kinglet bouncing around at a local park. I had never photographed one so I couldn't pass up the chance despite the light. In post, cropped about 25% off, NR on the bird and BG, cloned out a couple distracting bits. This is a busier setting than I normally like but this is typically where I see them. I left the small pine cone in to help show the size. Compressed the file decently to get under 600 Kb. No more room on the bottom or left.

    Camera: Nikon D500
    Lens: 200-500 f/5.6 at 500mm
    Specs: 1/320 ISO 6,400 f/5.6

Thanks for looking and commenting on prior posts!

Love these little birds. I had quite a few of them in my yard today. The parts of the bird that are in focus look nice and sharp but I would have liked more depth of field. Details look pretty good for such a low shutter speed and such a fast and tiny subject. The bird is a bit noisy though and I don't care for the cluttered background. If you go to Sandy Hook or one of the barrier beaches you should be able to find them flitting around some Goldenrod or some Red Cedar or something that is less dense.

Busy setting indeed, but you were lucky to have this individual pause, even if for a tiny bit, in an open spot like this. Good focus on the face. Kinglets are both extremely fun and extremely frustrating to photograph, unless you find a cooperative individual the responds to calls (judiciously of course).

For a first try (grab shot) at this beautiful, small "nervous nelly", I'd take it. I don't mind the DOF and you could do further NR on OOF back half of bird. The details in front are wonderful. I wish you were lower and the only environment I wish to be gone is the OOF branch near this beauty. TFS

Love the crest and the face but not so crazy about the big branch that intersects with the wings,

Nice view of the crest. Like the Framing of the image and it looks quite good for the high ISO.

This is nice view of the bird but the foliage overpowers him. I do love the feather detail on his anterior half.

You did a great job of picking the best available perspective and making a sharp image of a very difficult subject.
