I think the brightness is good. But that stick and branch behind its head doesn't look very good since they look aligned with the top of its head...no separation. I also think it would be good to brighten the eye a bit to make it stands out more from the black feather around it. If you crop a bit from the right, the bird would also not look that centered either. My 2 cents.

I like the PS work Mike Not bad at all and it is a more pleasing image !!! Its good to make all these changes but we stride to have it all in camera (if possible)

I like the space you gave to the virtual tail, its usually cut off !!! Good space for the bird and well presented !!! Also like the clearly visible eye indicating a good exposure !!!

There appears to be some white fringe surrounding the bird, but the original also has that, too :) Other than that, I think you did well, Mike.

Much improvement Mike! I agree with what Alfred is saying though about getting the shot right in camera. So, next time you are out, you must think about the BG, head angle, exp. and from where is the light coming (this guy is backlit abit).

As for the post processing, good job! But you can do better as you mentioned. I see a cloning trail (for lack of a better term) coming from the head of the bird moving to the left (easy fix). Also, when I work around the birds body/head with the clone tool, I up the brush hardness quiet a bit so as not to mess the edge of the bird up (I see some stuff around the head here). Very good work though, just go back and clean up! Dan Brown

thank you all once again. i try to make changes in my techniques, as much as i can, because of your comments.
Dan, wait until you see tomorrow's post. definitely not back lit.
i know i am not supposed to use mixed lighting but light, shadow and color are all of my favorites. (i used to be a color technician in R&D and QC). once or twice a year God gives me ones to remember. tomorrow's isn't great, just my type of photo gift.

Can't wait! Oh, by the way, this bird is a Rose-breasted Grosbeak. Dan
