    Default Elephant Calf

Another theme image of elephants. This one of the calf among the legs of the herd. The calf is close to the actual colors and then I darkened the legs and the sand when pp to provide the separation and tonal variance.

Hi Rachel, a lovely look at the little one with the parents around. The baby really stands out due to the tonal variance and the details are great.
    TFS. Techs are good too.

Personally I would keep to the colour version here Rachel, the lighting/manipulation/enhancement looks unnatural because it's focused purely on the calf only and so you have a big division of light between the calf & the herd. As presented I would make more of the darks & shadows in the herd to get the contrast required falling on their hides.

If you do choose to revisit the file you might want to address the masking line/halo along the RHS (as viewed) of the calfs head that is in heavy shadow and mask the light between it's legs as it should match between the herd.

Thanks Sanjeev and Steve. Steve with black and white images I tend to go for a bit more freedom of expression and artistic interpretation than the realism I go for in my color images. Can't believe I missed that halo.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

The details look quite good here. Like the little one. All the textures come out nice in the black and white conversion.

Hi Rachel always lovely to capture the little ones amongst the big legs, and have a clear view to them .
So i think you did well in timing , nice details and the conversion does look good to me .
I might crop the image more from the foot and RHS to get a tighter view to avoid the light tusk and the FG a bit .
I am fine the tonal thing and that the little Ellie does stand out , i am with you on the artsy freedom of that and no need for natural presentation of tones in B&W . As the godfather of B&W wildlife .....Mr Delaney does not leave the the tones as they are in the captured image , just leads the view to the subject by manipulating the tones . At least this is my impression ....

    Well done TFS Andreas
