    Default Another Northern Gannet

Another one from Bonaventure Island, Quebec. This is one of my last frames from the last day taken in the driving rain after all the other light weights had long started the hike down the hill. It was very cool to see the scores of Gannets change their landing approaches as often as the wind changed direction.

I know some will suggest cloning out the two extremely OOF birds but in this case I think they add some depth to the photo.

    1DMKIII, 70-200 f/2.8 @ 148mm; 1/1000 sec, f/3.5, ISO 500, Manual Flash @ 1:1 HSS, Full Frame

Great details here Steve and an excellent pose. In principle I don't mind the OOF birds, but the one that is half behind the main bird is distracting IMO.

Very nicely composed with excellent exposure and flight pose. IMO the out of focus birds are a slight distraction but hey that is how it was and I think it is a matter of taste here. Many thanks for sharing.

Great pose, details and exposure control. I would probably remove the OOF birds since they are so far away. Thanks for sharing!

    Hi Steve,

As the last of the "light weights" to leave you and I can attest to the fact that it was a driving rain (picture included). You told me to stay, but I had just dried off all my equipment. Now I really understand why I should have stayed. What a great shot. I personally don't mind the OOF birds. By the way, it was a pleasure spending time with you.

Hi Steve- I really like the image as-is. It is very plain and simple with all the basics looked after including exposure and comp. You did not have easy conditions to work in on the last day.

Hey John, thanks for taking and posting the image. It's funny to see this now that I'm back in a warm, dry place. What a place for a vacation.

Wow! What an awesome image Steve. I enjoyed Johns post of you standing all by yourself taking more pictures.
That would be me. LOL I don't much mind the OOF birds. I did think at first that you should clone them but then when I looked again it kind of said, depth. Great job on this. Lighting and sharpness are great.

Thank you Sharna. It was the last day and I really didn't want to leave such a fantastic spot regardless of the weather. I have a version where I cloned the OOF birds and still like the version I posted better.

Love the subject; great use of flash to get rid of all the dreariness. I find the oof bird near the near-secondaries distracting, the one below the far wing tip less so. Moving that second bird to the right would be an option...

I must confess to being one of the lighweights and I can attest to the fact that is was indeed pouring.
