    Default Barred Owl In Flight

    Attached Images Attached Images

I captured this image yesterday in Central Florida, with the Nikon D850 Handheld and Nikkor 500mm f4. After processing I thought the little black dots on the RS of the frame were some kind of posterization, but they were there on the RAW file.

    ISO 500
    f5.6
    1/3200
    Manual Mode
Processed on LR and PS. Neat image for background noise reduction
    Cropped Approx. 50%

Looking forward to your comments and critiques, they will be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

A fine capture, I haven't seen on of these birds it looks impressive. Good facial details, on looking I wonder (you will know better than I of course!) is it just a little heavy i.e. are the colours just a tad dark or maybe a tiny bit too much contrast?
I am surprised you needed NR on the background, it does look rather smooooth now to me .....maybe a little too smooth??

    Very nice Juan.
I like the downward wing stroke and the colorful BG. Nice and sharp and very nice catchlight.
The little spots do not bother me. I might be tempted to clone out the little ?leaf attached to the primary on left wing.
Is this from Blue Cypress lake?

Nice flight frame. The downstroke pose is nice also like how the bird is angled toward you. Nice background.

Fantastic! I love the wing position, and the BG. Like Gail I would remove the little feather between the primaries.

Thank you Gail, It was my intention to remove the leaf and I totally forgot about it. Yes, Blue Cypress Lake.

Pretty spectacular Juan. I think one of the best Barred Owl frames I've seen. I agree on the leaf removal, but just such a nice shot. Catchlight is perfect. TFS

You've got to be happy with this one Juan, great downstroke pose on he bird and a nice flight angle.

I was at Blue Cypress last year and there was a really tame Barred Owl hanging around the shop looking for scraps - I wonder if this is the same bird?

Excellent Juan! Man I need to catch up with a really tame Barred Owl. They are extremely difficult to photograph in the north east. Always perched very high up and in dense cover. I agree that this is one of the best Barred Owl frames I have seen. Great flight pose and details. I would brighten the image about a quarter stop and also remove a little bit of the yellow cast.

That's a beauty Juan. Great sharpness on the face, and very nice light. He really jumps off that background.

very cool frame Juan, tack sharp with excellent details and a nice BG typical of lake blue cypress. in a perfect world owl would be coming towards us, but I take this frame too. I wish to go back to this location, and get more BO frames. Last time I was on the lake was in 2011 with Doug, we were shooting with the old 1D4 which could not focus on sh** so although I got some rally nice frames, many were missed too.

    Thank you for commenting Artie.

When you say "dark" do you mean the whole image (Isaac thinks .25 of a stop dark) is dark or that the browns look too deep to you??

The whole thing looks too dark to me and I think the the colors are a bit muddy, i.,e, too dense ... But my monitor is slightly on the dark side ...
