Somebody wanted to see the whole head, so here it is. Northern Gannet, Bonventure Island, Quebec. On the roof.

Canon 400mm f/4 IS DO lens with the 1.4X II TC and the EOS-1D MIII. Evaluative metering + 1 1/3 stops set manually: 1/640 sec. at f/7.1. Flash did not fire. (See or request today's Bulletin for the frame before with flash.

Don't be shy; all comments welcome.

Art, I got to say, without flash, it still rocks. Amazing colors and lines. Love the blue eye of course. And the s curve to the head is smooth and silky. I also like the slight shadows under the neck or chin. The creases on the left side of the chin area form a nice triangle. Awesome creature.

The yellow looks great, and the fine smooth feathery details are impressive. I'm gonna have to try to make it up there one of these times :-)

For a 2D medium, this sure had a 3D feel. I just want to touch it. So fine.

You went and had a very successful trip young man! I like how the soft blue surrounds this species eye and how the background has just enough blue to show the yellows and whites in the feathers... very eye appealing!

I really like the soft colors in this and the beautiful curve of the neck/head.

Love the image. I notice from the flashed version better definition between background and subject in the area just above the bill to about a place just above the eye and a little portion for the back of the head as well. For me the flashed version has the subject standing out better from the background.

Wow, you have a better eye than me. Here is the flashed version. It will be interesting to see what folks think...

It IS lovely either way but the flash version does have a tiny edge IMO. I wonder...have you thought about color matching the BG sky to the blue shade of his eye rim? That warmer color might make the bird's head pop even more.

Oh boy, they keep coming and they are great! The bird seems to glow with its own source of light.

Beautiful portrait Artie, can barely tell the difference on the flashed version. Wish I could get back there again in August.

Too bad that you cannot make it. I always enjoy photogrpahing with you. How is it that we always wind up in places that are physically tough like Bonaventure and Nome??? I wish that I could do back to backs but the thought of climbing that hill nine days in row is just too much for me. Of the 18 slots on the 3 tours, Chris has just 3 openings on the last tour. Amazing.

beautiful image Artie... a bg with a little more contrast might work better, but the soft feel of this image gives a very artistic feel to the shot., interesting and pleasing to the eye.

Yes, Marcus, this was on the Bonaventure trip. What a place. There are three slots left on the very last trip in AUG. You can e-mail for details. You get five days of photography for the price of three.
