Hi all, am posting something different this time. I was in Sydney last week and got a chance to go for a short whale watching cruise. Here is an image from the trip. The was my first time to witness these great creatures from a distance. It was overcast and drizzling.

Hi Sanjeev, great to see you having the opportunity to shot something different.

I feel a few frames on with the trailing water from the tail fin (the classic shot) would have been better, you see the whole fin and the water running off. You did well with the kit available and framing, but 1/2000-2500 may have been better, just to really freeze the moment. I might go B/W as it is very monochromatic as presented. With some Contrast you can get some more separation in the water and perhaps a Curves adjustment (selective) for the water and some sharpening too?

Just my take, but if Rachel chimes in, you hopefully will have more suggestion on the B/W as she I understand has been, experimenting and doing morebrecently.

    TFS
    Steve

Hi Steve. Thanks for your RP. I had the same thought reg B&W before posting. You RP is great. I have another frame with that classical shot. Will post soon.

    Perfect, then perhaps try B/W.

    Hello Sanjeev,

Indeed B&W works so well in this instance. Would have really liked to see this elegant fin fill the frame but I gather you did all you could under the circumstances.

A lot more definition and sharpness in Steve's RP, hope you manage to implement his suggestions in your future whale images.

Otherwise, composition looks good and I quite like that you included the sky. Let's see some more from this trip, Sanjeev!

Have a great rest of the week,

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Hi Sanjeev -- Nice to something different and you did quite well in getting this frame. BW is the way to go here IMO and Steve's RP is quite nice. Will look forward for your next post from the series.

    TFS !

Looks like a "fine art" image. The black and white works quite well. The comp works well with the small in the frame look.

Hi Sanjeev - I love whale tail images. Glad you got an opportunity to capture some. If you shoot me the RAW before the weekend I am happy to have a go at a B&W.

    TFS,
    Rachel
