Default Insurance for Photographic Equipment for hobbyist

    Hi,
I wanted to buy a policy that will primarily cover accidental damage and theft ofthe photographic equipment. I am a hobbyist. Can anyone please suggest some companiesthat they have good experience with? (I live in California).

I cover mine in a personal articles rider to my homeowner's policy. Fortunately, I have never had to make a claim but it is covered for theft, accidental damage, etc, anywhere in the world.

I use professional insurance with Chubb through Nanpa. I have had them for many years now last year I made a claim for a repair (about $500) which they paid within 3 days after a simple phone call. My home owners insurance also covers personal property but I am not sure if they will actually pay $13000 for a lens if it gets damaged they probably have their own deductibles and appraisals

If you have high value equipment it probably makes sense to get professional insurance specifically for photo equipment. If you don’t have high value gear Home owners will probably be good enough.

Depending on the policy terms, often a non-professional (based on a definition often involving a certain percentage of annual income derived from photography) cannot cover their equipment on a professional photographer policy. A personal articles rider to a homeowner's policy is for coverage of high value items such as jewelry, artwork, electronics, photo gear, etc. for which you specify the appraised value or retail price of each item you want separately covered outside of the coverage limits and deductible of your existing homeowner's policy. The premium for such coverage is based on the value of the items covered. The one downside is that most carriers insure the retail value but no sales tax paid on the original purchase or to be paid on replacement.

You don’t need to show any income for Chubb. All you need is NANPA membership I think it’s $100 per year

Hi,Thank you very much Rachel and Arash for sharing your experience with me. I have a home owner policy but I am not sure in case of a claim how helpful it will be. That is why I looked for a policy that is specialized for photographic equipment. Chubb does not do insurance for USA and so they suggested me some other options (www.insuremyequipment.com) which is a bit more expensive (around 500/ year).
So I was exploring other options when I found state farm insurance which is cheaper (around 200/ year). I am not sure how good it will be in case of an actual claim but for now this is kind of the best option that I can afford.

I have no idea what you are talking about. I have Chubb insurance and I am here in the US :) You need to apply through NANPA (www.nanpa.org) but it will probably cost more than $200 / year.

The personal articles rider I describe above is an add-on to your homeowners' policy. Call the company that your homeowners policy is with and ask about a personal articles rider.

Sorry Arash my bad. I actually went to a wrong website, front row (which is for Canada) not Chubb.
