Bill:
I like the low angle, the slight ridge he is on, the fine texture of the sand, with some matching shades in it, that play well with birds coloration. Good angle in the frame.
On my monitor, the IQ isn't quite up to your usual standards. Perhaps he had just come out of the surf and was still wet, but the fine details are a bit soft.
Perhaps a large crop?
Cheers
Randy
Nice Bill, great low POV and the way the background falls away from the shot has given a nice clean frame
Mike
Thanks Randy. He did look a bit scruffy as if he had just come out of the water, with some fine plumage clumped together. Actually this is just about full-frame except for a bit of rotation. Given that I was so close to him, I may not have had enough DOF to get the head completely sharp.
I love these ringed plovers. They look so similar to our semi-palmated plovers.
Love the fine sand he is perched on. Great low POV. Bet you can't do that right now with your "broken"wing. Hope you are healing up nicely for future adventures!
I am on my laptop so DOF looks good from here.
Nice body and head position.
Well done!
Gail
Thanks Gail. The wing is healing; better each day, but it's just a very slow process. Getting better on the computer, so this moment I happen to be looking a birding maps of Iceland. Maybe a Gyrfalcon next time?
Hey Bill, What did you do to your shoulder?
Wow, you had the perfect set-up -- bird on a ridge with a distant background. The face and the front end look a bit crunchy/contrasty to me ...

Thanks Artie. Torn rotator cuff while in a Zodiac near Svalbard. It's healing slowly.
Yes, this was a great view with clean beach and background. I agree it's a bit crunchy on the face; I think the focus point must have been elsewhere. I have other frames of this little guy, doing his 'broken-wing' thing to distract us from the nearby nest (and also some shots of the tiny speckled eggs in the nest, and a well camouflaged chick), but at that point a harsh mid-day sun had come out.
I am in the same boat. I fell in March in my home when I slipped on a puddle on my tile floor, created by my swim suit :( Complete and total tear of the supra-spinatus :) I said no thank you to the surgery and went to Finland, Norway, and the UK for six weeks instead.

Nice how the bird is on that bump of sand. The comp is nice. Also like that nice background.
Thanks John.
