    Default 24-120mm for Flight Photography!

This image was created on the 2018 UK Puffins and Gannets IPT near Bass Rock, Scotland on the morning of July 10, 2018. I used the hand held Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR lens (at 105mm) with the Nikon D850. ISO 800. Matrix metering plus 1/3 stop as framed: 1/6400 sec. at f/7.1. NATURAL AUTO WB at 9:03am on a mostly sunny day.

It is not often that we get to shoot flight with a short zoom lens ...

Center Group (grp)/Continuous (AI Servo in Canon)/Shutter button AF was active at the moment of exposure. The array was centered on the bird’s wings. Focus peaking AF Fine-tune: +4. See the Nikon AF Fine-tune e-Guide here.

Don't be shy; all comments are welcome.

    Artie:

I really like the high key effect, spread wings, feet, tail and open mouth.

    Nice comp. as well.

Were you on a cliff top for this one?

    Cheers

That is a super cool and unique Gannet flight pose. If taken from a boat it will be one that I will probably never get as I am awful on boats. High key look is very nice as well. Must be awesome seeing these birds up close and being able to photograph them with a macro lens! Might be a difference in monitors, but I see a touch on noise on the grayer areas of the belly and undertail that was probably not evident on the smaller screen.

Quite a dynamic pose you got here, plus the gannet looks rather excited at the prospect of catching one of your tossed fish! I love the see-through wings and tail feathers.

High key look is great as well as that screaming pose. You were pretty close to this gannet.
