More and more I'm becoming a fan b/w-highkey bird photography... the nice thing about it is that even when the sky is completely overcast (and mostly not all that interesting), you can still continue making nice flightshots. I'm curious what you think of it.

I remember a time that high key images of this species in Spitsbergen were absolutely not your thing buddy.....

I love the way you have been playing around with this! I really like the pose which gives me a feel of freedom, don't know why.....Wish the tail feathers, which are really nice in this species and would even give this shot more power IMO were more visible. Great shot nonetheless......

    Well....I don't like colour-highkey that is.....;)

BTW, thanks for the comment regarding the feeling you get from this shot. Those are the most valuable comments people can give IMO. People instantly love/hate certain images not because of technical quality....but because the give them a certain feeling. Once you know how to play with this, you'll become a better photographer. So thanks for this comment...

Hello Jasper - I think that people get too hung-up over technical issues. To me the first port of call is always, do I get an emotional 'hit' from an image? Well I certainly do from yours, my friend! I really love the whimsical nature of this image and agree about high-key b/w images and the overcast sky. I think that the way you have framed the bird works perfectly too.
    Regards,
    Nicki

The B/W really works here. Great pose and framing, too. I might lighten the chest a tad. Thanks for sharing!

Jasper, I really love the overall "flow" here...a very unique image that instantly speaks of freedom, flight, and grace in my mind. Great work experimenting with these high-key flight B&W's. To me it's perfect that the wings and tail fade into nothingness...just adds to the mystery of the image. The tonal range exhibited here works great...wouldn't change a thing.

I've never been into high key anything myself, but this image has made me open up to the possibilities of making "art" out of a high key bird image. Very nicely done!

Jasper I like this image a lot as it is a very artistic capture and especially with the high key BG. The movement captured here is almost like a sky ballet. Really very graceful and beautiful !!! Exceptional work !!!

Absolutely love this image. There is lot of grace in the movement. It looks like a fairy with the light wings. :-) This high key image works for me.

Jasper, I don't have much to add here but I will say that I don't remember the last time I really liked a B/W bird image...this is one of those times :-) Two thumbs up!!
