What a privilege to photograph this species for the first time in spring, breeding plumage. There was a flock of 25-30 birds on Sanibel Island early in the morning. I ended up wading out into some heavy surf for this series of images.

The low angle really makes this shot, love the probing pose with the still watchful eye towards you. The clean BG really sets this one of. I am watching this on my screen at work so I don't know if I am right about this, but it looks as if there is a slight red cast in this shot also it looks as if this shot could use a bit CW rotation. Otherwise perfect!!!
Great work on this individual....wonderful plumage and you've got lots of detail. You mention heavy surf, did you have to wade out past the bird and shoot toward shore? (Because I find them in the shallows) Well worth the effort here.
