Hi John, the negative space isn't working compositionally, here I would just go square. You have cracking detail & light coming through the ears and the eyes appear sharp, but because the capture is so 'in your face' you have runout of DoF, the nose in this particular capture needed to be sharp too. You were just too close, backing off and using more zoom would have helped. You also need to looking at getting some variation in the face to give 'form & depth'. Killer BKG.
Hope others chime in with thoughts and differ from mine.

Hi John - Seeing the thumbnail I even thought, wow, I like negative space but that seems a bit too much. Opening it only confirmed my initial thoughts. I like Steve's square version. Another option would be to go to an 4x5 ratio losing about half the negative space but with the head slightly angled to the right I think you needed the negative space on the rhs rather than left. Love that you can see the veins in the ears and the eyelashes. Colors look good too.
