    Default Great Horned Owl

About a month ago, Isaac Grant reached out to me to ask about owls in the Pacific Northwest. I told him to just come to Arizona and I'd try to show him some owls and other birds (we ended up stumbling across a few through sheer dumb luck ). He decided that sounded like a good idea despite the 110 Fahrenheit and up temperatures, and booked his flights. Well, after a Friday - Tuesday extended weekend trip around Arizona, we came away with some real fun stuff. Here's a Great Horned Owl juvenile, likely the same bird as in my moon/saguaro shot. It was 105 this night, the bird was hot and opening its wings to try to stay cool.

    Techs:
    Nikon D750
    Nikkor 600mm f4
    Nikon SB-910 flash
    1.4x TC
    Tripod mounted
    1/125
    f8
    ISO 1000
    TTL flash +0.3 EV

Like the curved perch and the pose on the owl. Love those eyes. This is my favorite owl so far.

Great capture, Walker. Excellent flash work. Those amazing eyes looking right at you. Also like the perch and that we can see his talons. Very well done.

Looking forward to more images from this shoot, and I'm sure we will see some of Isaac's images soon.

Looks really good Walker, the Owl Whisperer. Great pose and great bird under seriously oppressive conditions. This is not a sit on your couch photo. It takes a special effort to get a shot like this, baking heat, swarming mosquitos, thick dust, wild horses running around us and trying and trying to track these birds at night through thorns and snakes makes this a very special photo. This is just great with the wings showing, the perfect eye contact, the blood on the perch and how the bird is set off perfectly against the black background. As discussed, maybe this is just a touch underexposed.

Isaac - Yeah, it was a crazy time for sure. Tons of fun. I will boost the exposure a bit and see how it looks!

Krishna, Geoffrey, John - thanks for the kind comments!

Very nice Walker. Sounds like tough shooting conditions -- 100+ F is way too hot for me. Sounds like you guys had a good time and look forward to more images. Lighting looks good as does the detail and perch. Have you tried around with off camera lighting with these owls (assuming this is on hotshoe mounted)? Very interested in this process. TFS

Very special image obviously done under difficult conditions! Nice use of flash. Love the back story and the open wings on this juvie.

Well that is Flipping awesome!! What a great look at this beautiful owl. Love the flared wings and the direct stare. Details and flash work look really nice also but I would increase exposure just a little bit. Great work getting off the couch and getting this one ;)

Beautiful image. That black BG really shows the bird well. I have never used flash, but looking at this, makes me want to try it. Well done
