My first time getting shots of these guys. pretty hard to keep them in the viewfinder.
It was overcast so light could have been better but I think its alright. background is water with grey sky reflection.

I see these all the time but they are pretty erratic. Congrats on pulling this one off. Details looks good and i like the catchlight in the eye here.

Love this one Stuart. You caught a perfect pose here. Details look very nice and this is really a beautiful and underrated tern. I do think the colors are a bit thin which happens all the time in the lighting conditions that you describe. Happens on my 1dx2 as well. You have to build them back up a bit. This is typically done in levels by adding some blacks, reducing mid tones or in selective color by adding some blacks to the neutrals and to the black. If done judiciously then the depth in the shot really comes out and you will see that the original will almost look like it had a bit of film on it that you washed away. Another super easy shortcut is to put the shot on it's own layer, go to IMAGE > AUTO TONE and then lower the opacity of the layer until it looks about right with some increased depth and tone. I could almost guarantee that if you did auto tone as a quick fix at between 25-35% on this shot the bird would really come to life.

Great looking BIF capture of this tern. Perfect dorsal view with good flight angle. Isaac's suggestion is certainly worth a try. My suggestion is more of the nit-picking variety, but for my personal preference I might remove a tad from the left to de-center the bird a little more; or possibly a version as a vertical. No matter what, it's a handsome shot.

I like this one Stuart. I have always been a fan of banking wing BIF images. Looks like tack focus and I like the water background. Sounds like good advice from Issac.

This, including a bit more room above and below. What a great view of this fine species. Tack sharp on the face would look great as a vertical. I know how tough these are to photograph in flight, you did exceptionally well!

Now we're talking Stuart! Looks much better. Minor change makes a huge difference that can really make or break the presentation. This is a really great Black Tern frame. Congrats!
