    Default Hooded Merganser

    Hooded Merganser Lophodytes cucullatus
    December 30, 2007, Viera Wetlands

Canon EOS 20D with Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM lens and Canon EF 2x II extender. f/8 at 1/320s, ISO 200.

These birds have always been very shy and usually unapproachable, but after a while one became cooperative for a short time.

I'm glad you found a cooperative one. Around here they are very skittish, too. The image looks very good, a lower angle would make it even better.

It's great to see you in here, Jay!

Sweet shot. I haven't even seen one yet, let alone get the shot.

20D? I'm guessing you were using two bodies that day and had the 40D going with the 400mm.

Well done. This bird has been a nemesis for me. Suggestion: De SAT the yellow iris a bit (using a QM) and then create a QM of the pupil. Desaturate that completley and then slide the Lightness Slider in Hue/SAT well to the left. This will increase the apparent overall sharpness dramatically.

    Later and love, artie

A very nice image. I agree on he lower angle suggestion and for me I think a tighter drop would be nice to try.

    Hi Jay -

These birds haven't been very cooperative for me, so it's nice to see that at least they cooperative for others now and then! Lower angle mentioned, but I would not crop it...I like your framing showing the reflections.
