After years of looking for a fox den (that was photographable) a good friend put me on to this den. He is a letter carrier and spotted the female 3 days in a row while doing his rounds in the same field.
We went exploring and found a den with 3 kits. Best part is that it is away from the road and very private.
    Canon 1 DX
    600mm and 1.4
    ISO 1600 SS 1/1600 f 7.1
Nothing added or cloned. Crop to 70% FF. Processed in LR and CS5. Taken a few minutes before sunset. The BG has some posterization but it is not there on the TIFF.
Comments and critiques always appreciated and learned from with thanks,
    Gail

A wonderful tender moment in gorgeous evening light Gail, techs and colour look first rate,

I would however position mum a little off centre and slightly right and run some NR on the BG, surprising for ISO1600 on the 1DX?

Beautiful tender instant captured so well, Gail. Nice timing with setting sunlight, and lovely BG.

Nice to see you posting here, Gail. Lucky you getting on to a den and great you had a contact who could help. This is super-cute and a beautiful moment captured. The look on the young one's face is priceless. In terms of possible things to look at, I would also move mum to the right or take some of the right side of the frame and also noticed the noise in the background noted by Marc but can't see any posterisation there. I'd also be inclined to tone down the highlights on mum's face but that is simply a gut feel without knowing what she looked like in real life. If accurate, then please ignore that comment.

Thanks for your advice gentlemen! Here is my redo and I also cloned/blended away the horizontal branch to the left of fox. I had increased the exposure to 0.3in LR in first post so I only increased the exposure by 0.2 to tone down the brights in the face. I did a double round of NR on the BG.
Agree that this is a lot better with fox moved to right. Thanks for the fresh eyes on this image.

Hi Gail - Great to see you posting in Wildlife again and I hope that your knowledge of the den site means that we'll get to see these kits grow up this summer. Your rp is the one for me with the softened hls and the off-center comp. Lovely warm light and a tender moment between mom and kit. Well done.

    TFS,
    Rachel

The OP was beautiful with the light and the tender moment but the RP nails it from a tech perspective

    Lovely capture dear Gail,

Sweet pose from Mom and her little one, love the HA and expression. Good choice of DoF and nice POV. Beautiful light and colours, BG is awesome:)

RP definitely works for me and those brights on Mom's face do look a little tamer.

I so enjoyed viewing, this reminded me of the cute Bat Eared Foxes of the Kalahari. Thank you so much for sharing

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea
