Default 500/600 F4 with or without 1.4 TC

The opinion of members will be appreciated.

    I mainly do avian photography.

Is the use of a 500(or 600) F4 lens without a 1.4 TC favored above the lens with a TC?
I know that you lose 1 stop with the TC but I normally shoot at 5.6 or more in any case for DOF.
Secondary effects such a small loss of sharpness and speed of focus may also be a problem.
Also you will probably crop more without the TC.

    Thank you.

I use that lens and TC with a 7DII and am very happy with it. Sharpness loss, if there is any, is negligible to my eyes. AF does suffer a bit, but is more than fine for most subjects, even for larger birds in flight (gulls, ducks, raptors, herons/egrets, etc..). The 5DIV is even better so you should be fine. I have not done any comparisons in IQ between a full-frame with TC image vs a cropped one without so I cannot comment on that, but I do not like cropping except for composition anyhow.

the lens is going to be tack sharp with either TC, you won't be able to tell the difference. with the 2X the AF will become quite slow and hit and miss with the 5D4 however....

I don't hesitate to use the 1.4x with either the 500 or 600 f/4. Sharpness will not be affected IMO, but AF will be a touch slower.
