    Default An Ungodly Thought

After reading an article at another respected site, it begged the queston, can you get 12MP quality or better, "still images" from a HDVC? This is a excerpt from that article:

    Chris Sandberg
I attended a lecture/slide show/presentation by photographer Sam Abell last week, as part of the National Geographic Live! season in Minneapolis. Mr. Abell has had a 25-year career shooting for National Geographic, and he was asked what an aspiring young photographer who wanted to follow in his footsteps should do, He responded that the National Geographic now looks to only hire still photographers who are also video-trained! His advice was that young photographers should be sure they are versed in both disciplines.
So, we may be seeing not only the tip of the iceberg on the technology side, but truly a convergence on the artistic side, as well.

    Interesting Bill !!!

I have tried some video in the past ( U/W) found the editing interesting, making the actual videos not very exciting. Presently we do use a small HD video recorder mainly for splicing a little video in the slide presentations !!! Fabs has them on her Blog !!

It would appear from looking at the selection at B&H and a newcomer, Red One, that while you can get a new Canon 1081i at about the same price and weight as a D3 with a 2-4VR the quality of the still image does not compare. Not only until you approach the latest technology with it's $40,000 - $60,000+ price tag is this achievable. 60/fps is exciting to think about with 20X lenses. With the new Casio still/video camera, it may put a bug in the ear of the big five, something to look for in the next couple years or so. The times they are a changin'.

No question it will come!!! I think some news guys are already using video and grabbing stills form that. You know down the road the quality and file size will increase at a rate faster than in the past....so get ready.

I wouldn't be surprised if something like this would become available at some point. Who knows, maybe in 10 years.

Actually Axel, the tech is already here. It just needs to be put into one unit and then let the old - high tech/new price thing do it's work. We may be looking at stuff we can afford in two or three years. The sensors are available. The mirror problem is solved. Storage is growing. The only thing that will slow it a little is this economy, but even that will get better in a while.Check out the new little Casio still/video 6MP for a $1000. It's nothing we would buy but it's the first step in this direction. You know how it is once the ball starts rolling. http://gizmodo.com/383843/casio-exil...ingly-powerful
