    Default pit stop migratory whimbrel

Just returned from a SW Florida trip after meeting up with Gail B. While we were on a beach in our waders lying in the water, (life is sooo good!), a flock of fifteen whimbrels flew in front of us. They stayed fairly huddled together and cautious, no feeding, no preening. Within a minute off they flew. Later we spotted a couple and moved closer to them. They were glued together and only for a short while this bird distanced himself enough for me to grab a few frames. I notice the deeper pink/reddish stripe on the beak, indicative of breeding color. They are a fascinating shorebird with extraordinary migratory distances from the South American/Caribbean wintering grounds to "Arctic" tundra breeding grounds. Sadly, despite their 20-25 K migratory prowess, shorebirds from "shooting swamps" is legal and even traditional on many Caribbean islands that are not signatory to bird -protection agreements such as the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. In the USA, this law has weakened under the Trump administration, actions that incidentally result in migratory bird death and injury (known as "incidental take") are legal as long as no other laws are broken.

Hi Ann, excellent low angle here, and you managed a good HA too. Good DOF on the Whimbrel, tack sharp, and the ruffled feathers show up nicely. The slightly raised foot adds a nice touch. Well captured.

Looking real good Ann. Almost 3D feel about it on my monitor. Great POV and feather detail. Lovely pose. Very nice.

Sweet one Ann. I am envious. When we get them around the city they are always crazy wary of people and never allow close approach. Details look good and background is very nice. I would brighten the image a little and add a few points of black like we discussed. Would also make it a touch warmer. Just 3-5 points of brightness, blacks and warmth I think would really make a big impact on an already beautiful image.

Ann - I love the low angle pov and the horizontal lines in the bg. The composition and is perfect and I don't think it could get any sharper. I've still never seen one. Maybe a few will fly up to Desoto at some point.

Great low POV -- I hope you were able to clean the muck off of your camera. Good comp and BG, and great pose. Exposure looks good to me as posted.

Recent changes to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act are a real shame.

A real beauty, and I even like the displaced feathers. My type of low angle, and the raised foot adds lots of interest.

Nice frame I like everything except for the mud. We have these guys here too but I don't bother with them unless they are on a nice sandy beach, when the hang out in the mud it's tough to get a good shot. everything else is very good would warm the image and add a touch of sharpening

I am posting post #9999 just for you Ann!! You captured a wonderful moment here. Love the light ( but I think you could go a tad warmer based on my memory) and that messed up/puffed up feather on the belly.
Perfect head angle and good POV.
    Well done,
    Gail

Beautiful image. These are a personal favorite of mine. Getting low did him/her justice. Only way to go on shorebirds.
