Since I live in an apartment and have never owned property, I am SO envious of people with back yard set-ups!
Moss on the perch is a great splash of color. I think the exposure could be turned down a touch to capture a bit
    more detail on the bird.

Hey Dorian, I have 186 species on my yard list in the last 14 years I have lived here. Pretty good for a NYC yard, huh? But the rub is that photography here is terrible with tall trees and shooting into the sun.

I really like the perch and the pose John. Nice that you got it on the bark more, rather than on the edge of the trunk. I like that we can see the tail spread out. I agree that toning down the exposure would help a little. It seems some of the fine feather details on the face and chest/belly have been lost. If you are going to crop a bunch it is vital that you have the exposure spot on so that you do not introduce too much noise or lose too many details. I think this shot would work fine if it was a little looser on the crop as well. Both are easy fixes and everything else is really nice.

Lovely capture John but it looks too bright to me, I have an alternative for you to consider WDYT? I reckon if you revisit the raw file you could have a real gem.

I agree with the comments. The re-post is much better.

I like the vertical composition and the moss on the perch.

    thanks for sharing.

I think that the repost has done a good job at toning down some of the hot areas but on my screen it has lost too much vibrance in the perch and the whites of the woodpecker are now gray and a bit unnatural. These birds are very black and very white and don't have tones of gray at all. Because of that they are very hard to get perfect.

I agree with Isaac about the repost here.
