    Default Family Portrait (almost)

Polar Bear family got up from their 4 hours nap and about 15 minutes of nursing. We had beautiful light at noon, but by the time the bears woke up, the sun had disappeared behind dark cloud. This was our only sighting in 8 days at Wapusk National Park. We felt we were lucky that we didn't have to go home empty handed.

It was tough to get a family portrait with all 3 looking at me.

    Canon 1DX2
600f4 II, 1.4X TC III, Gitzo 3530LS, RRS ballhead
    1/1600, f11, Iso 800

Cropped to about 65% of FF.

Adjusted WB, added a little clarity (I don't normally touch this, but just tried to bring out a little more details on the fur), sharpened.

Thank you for commenting on my previous PB image. Will work on it this weekend.

Another really nice moment captured, Loi. You must have been both elated and relieved to get this opportunity after such a patient wait. I'd have been very disappointed if I'd left empty handed. The detail on this one doesn't look quite as good to me compared to your previous post but not sure why as the crop isn't that big and the techs look fine? I like the composition on this one. If mine, I'd burn in the OOF snow flake over the mother's nose to make it less obvious and maybe warm it a touch as the snow looks slightly blue. Hope to see more from this encounter.

Hi Loi - Another really cute image and I love the eye contact with mom. It must have been very frustrating to not see any bears for the majority of the trip but would have been even more so if you had to leave without seeing any. I agree with Glenn that the face of mom in particular seems to be lacking a lot of detail. A midtones curve adjustment will bring out more detail. I don't mind the lack of detail in the snow as much and like the cooler slight blue tone of the snow. I am again seeing a slight magenta tinge on the cubs. The file is definitely worth a revisit.

Nice to see this posted big. I wonder if there was a snowflake between you and the mom's face. The right side of the muzzle looks soft. Still another great winter polar bear image.

Hi Loi, a cute frame indeed. I love the curious look on the cub and the comp works fine, agree reg the less detail on moms face.

unfortunately, Mother Nature was not so kind as she kept the sun away and whipped up a strong wind the blew snow every where. For those of you who have not shot in that type of conditions, getting super sharp images with great details was not in the card. We were also at least 80 yards away.

Colours are a little better Loi, but with the head soft, it's not a keeper sadly for me. With the MKII ISO1600 for more SS, zero noise and a better capture.
