i put up another pose for this bird back in the beginning of june. i seemed to get some real problems. they accused me of giving the wrong gender. i looked it up in Sibley field guide to birds. it is definitely a girl. it wasn't the usual guys that look at my stuff. i hope this is an ok picture. i only cropped about 1/3 and added brightness.
Looks good to me. Like the pose, the colors. Could use just a tad more room...not a whole not, just a little bit, perhaps it's just me though. Don't know why but it looks a bit soft on my monitor. Could use some sharpening?
Nice pose, good head angle (I think). I think you could take a little space off the left and add a little more on the bottom and right. And as Desmond says, it could use a little sharpening overall. The bright leaves in the foreground are somewhat distracting to me, as are the brighter areas in the background. Good work.
Mike I don't think 'accuse' is quite the right word, trying to be helpful suits the case much better. In the end your ID as a female was the correct one.
Much better Mike !!! Couldn't have said it any better than Nonda did regarding the ID !!!
The quality here is much better since there are lots of pixels You could even crop less, would like more room bottom/top/right and less at the back. Leaving enough for the tail. The point of focus is on the shoulder not the head, for close up images its critical, just focus on the eye and recompose. Exposure, pose and processing look fine !!!
i'm sorry if i goofed the statements i made, but it hurt me.
i have a question though, how do you guys get your photos. do you go to a site and set up and take pictures, or go where a feeder is and get your shots that way. i'm not sure if i am doing anything right these days. i have a feeder in my backyard and attract birds by varying the seed mix. i have decided to go out and cut a lot of the foliage in the tree, and get some light that way.
is there a better way to get your shots than this?
mike, in answer to your above question: you can go to your trees and cut some nice looking limbs that would make a good perch. set up the perch near the feeder where your bg will be clean. then set yourself up where you will have good light coming from behind you and maybe even get a blind. then wait. you now have total control of the perch and the bg. all you to do is add the birds!!! also see my other post in the nuthatch thread. might help for bigger birds!!
thanks to you all, especially Harold. i took a stick and cut out areas to increase light. i'll see tomorrow if i did ok. right now it looks like i increased light by at least 3x. i've tried using aperture priority rather than shutter speed. it has its own set of problems.
talk to you all tomorrow.
mike
Mike I just went on a trip, drove three and a half hours up and three and a half back ...... don't think there will be any keepers at all !!!!!! It isn't going out and the birds will pose for you.
Setting perches is a way but another is going to a place that you will find birds. Would try getting together with other bird photographers in your area !!! Another good suggestion would be taking a workshop !!
