I admit the title is corny, but when a pelican goes into "helicopter mode" hovering in the headwind, it's the first term that comes to mind! He probably hung there for a good fifteen to twenty seconds, so there wasn't much of an excuse to mess anything up. In a perfect world the wing wouldn't be out flat behind the head, but that's the way they hold them when trying to float in place.

Jake - a nicely captured Pelican in flight. It looks sharp but under exposed on my monitor and there is not much detail available in the darker areas of the Pelican. You might try raising the brightness on the entire bird and the exposure / shadows selectively on the darker areas to see if you can coax more detail out.

Remember, 1 1/3 stops overexposed on the camera's meter for a frame like this shooting into the bright blue sky. Looks a bit under as the guys have mentioned. Otherwise the pose and details look good. Well done
