    Processed in DPP4 and PScc:

    1) I cropped this roughly 15% to put the subject further to the right in the frame and a slight bit off the bottom for a better “cut”.
    2) added NR on the BG

I was laying on my belly on the beach photographing this curious Ring Billed Gull when he decided to approach me to within the minimum focusing distance of my lens (3 ft). He gave me plenty of opportunities before he came too close.

Thanks for taking the time to look. As always, comments are appreciated.

Nice portrait of this ring-bill. Good detail in the whites like the background.

Nice looking portrait Noel. Details and colors look good and the overall exposure looks nice too. Well done

    Good solid image.
Whites look good and nice clean BG and POV. I see a bit of posterization in the BG (especially to left of bird) and would run a slight gaussian blur to get rid of it.
The comp seems a bit awkward to me. I would move the bird slightly to the left in the frame,
    Gail

Thanks Gail, David, and John for the comments. Gail I've never used the Gaussian Blur, but I tried it. I cropped the comp more to place the subject back closer to the center, and then selected the BG and ran the Gaussian Blur at 1 pixel. Is posterization those thin curved light blue lines in the bg? What does the posterization come from? Thanks again for the assistance. Here is the repost:

I like the sharpness, details, exposure and red eye ring. Nice image of an often overlooked subject.

RP is best for my Noel, nice details and exposure against a clean BG. Yep it looks like those lines are posterization in the BG, which can come from too much NR and / or compression when downsizing, in my experience. Others may have better strategies but in that situation I try some gaussian blur as Gail suggestion, or just less NR. TFS

Alex and Gail thank you, thank you, thank you. I've been cranking up the BG NR simply because I didn't see a penalty to the image quality...only a benefit. Now i see the penalty clearly. I'll start scaling back the BG NR.

No problem Noel, in Artie and Arash's professional photographers guide to post processing ebook there's a page or two on how to handle / remove posterization if you own that guide. Best,
