Some of you may know, John Norton of Jonesport Maine died a couple of weeks ago. He ferried visitors, photographers, and anyone else who loved birds, to Machias Seal Island for many decades. He took over from his dad, Dana Norton, who did the same thing. Johns daughter will most likely carry on the tradition.
John will be sorely missed.
He had a typical new england crusty appeal. Salt water ran in his veins and he loved the sea. He was a good photographer, avid birder and pretty decent person. I took 4 trips with him to the island, spent a few nights watching the sunset in Jonesport and shared my images with him after my trips and from other areas of Maine. He always was polite and encouraged visitors to his piece of the world to respect the natural beauty around him.
Thought I'd post a picture of Capt. John Norton taken last summer while out on "The Chief" while returning from Machias Seal Island. His daughter was at the helm while he was just enjoying the ride. He and his father were both full of personality and knowledge. It was a pleasure to have known them both.
Hey Grady,
A very nice tribute to Barna and John! I had the pleasure of going out with both of them for the last 10 years! I'm glad my family also got the opportunity to go on the island and meet the both of them as well as his daughter.
John and Barna were always notorious for heated exchanges.........as most Fathers and sons do....but I always remember the picture that Barna always shared with pride when visitors would come pay him a visit............him and John..........standing on Machias Seal Island.........called "John and Me....storming the island" after one of many numerous disputes with the Canadian gov't over landing rights. Here were 2 opposites......Barna, clean shaven & 100 pounds soaking wet..........and John (before cancer) 200+ pounds, wooly beard and hair.....900 year old wool sweater, and a wicked sense of NE........which mellowed over the years. We became good friend over the years......and I will dearly miss him but will support his daughter as she continues the tradition of visiting MSI.
