This is one from the Isle of Islay, on Scotlands West Coast, during a trip last year. Late evening, as I was driving around on the hills. Midgies are small flying insects, that swarm in their millions and love blood. So they bite big style.

Wow, glad I wasn't there Will. That's a lot of midges. I'd be looking quite hassled too, as this deer is. I really like the way you've used the OOF grass to frame the bottom part and the tree is almost a perfect frame for the animal on the left and top too! Well spotted moment. The detail is wonderful on the deer and colour great. Tones on the animal are a touch flat and inky in parts but I suspect this reflects some shadowing? Maybe not much you could do about that - and with all those midges, I wouldn't be waiting outside for a second longer than was essential. The rest of the composition works well for me.

Hi Will I like the framing with the habitat and the wet looking Deer.

I think you could have easily gone to 3200 for a tad more SS here Will. I would also look at a 10x8 format working from the top LHC down and perhaps a sliver more below. I would reduce the 'Aqua' colour coming through in the trees. Those midges are not good to be near, for sure, although not as bad as the Alaska ones!!!

Thanks for that guys, much appreciated and learned from. What about the OOF grasses in front of the deer? Would you remove the one on the neck area?

It's a brave man to try that Will, personally I would leave it, it looks more natural to me and not distracting.

Like how the tree frames the deer. That sure is a lot of midges. The out of focus foreground is nice as well.

Hi Will - That deer needs some deet, that's a ton of midges. I like the big eyes. I could say bug eyes but that's too easy a pun. The comp works and the oof grasses add a nice touch of color and are not so bright as to distract. Steve has already mentioned the fringing in the tree branches.

Nice shot Will, the best advice I can offer is leave the kilt at home when the midges are about.
