Portrait of a whitetail buck from the beginning of the rut. This one was underexposed hence the noise. Image adjustments in Lightroom.

Hi John - This is a tough one. The buck looks pretty good, despite the noise but I do want a bit more room above. However, the bg overpowers the subject for me with the warm, almost fiery yellow and orange tones and the specular hls. The oof green leaves are very distracting and problematic for me. Let's see what the others say.

    Rachel

John have you got Nik collection? Viveza could help on the background. Regarding the buck are the dark to mid tones just a little heavy? You really have some good detail there.

Hi John, I like the concept, but feel it has been too 'processed'.

You have taken a lot of deer images, but the light constantly is not in your favour, any particular reason?

The BG is the first thing I was drawn to, even though there is some good detail on the head. Agree with whats already been said. Viveza does work on the BG if you use it gently, along with less contrast.

Thanks Steve, the deer come out late evening or early mprning. When the light is not the best.

Indeed, but surely you must be entitled to some good light after all the hours you have put in at some point. I know weather is changeable but I do hope your luck changes and you get some good light in the New Year.

The colours here are what I was drawn to when looking at this John. Nice that the head is against a relatively even patch of blurred colour too. I'm in two minds though whether the background is a problem. I like the great colour there but also accept it will draw attention away from the animal. Detail looks great and colour and tone on the animal fine to my eye. The noise isn't noticeable to me but if you are worried, it's easy enough to deal with. I still think this is a pretty nice shot.
