This buck came quite close too me one evening while i was photographing some other deer to my right. Could not figure out why then he bedded down and took a short nap about 12-15 feet away. Check out the ticks on his ear they are fully engorged. Image adjustments in Lightroom.

    Hand held, Full frame.

I like the exposure and colours, the eye looks well focused. I noticed the tick, he wouldn't have been hungry that evening I am sure!
I am sure had I been in your position I would have taken a very similar image but I think I would have tried one at a shorter focal length too to get more DOF.

Hi John, I'm not loving the crop, I think being more 'aggressive' and using RoT's I think provides a better framing. At f/11 I'm really surprised about the DoF as you really needed the muzzle in focus too, therefore I'm wondering if you need to pull the AFMA forward, or were just too close.

    Canon 5D MarkIII, Sigma 150-600 Contemporary, 600mm, f/11
At say 13ft (12-15ft to subject) that would give you about 8 inches overall DoF

Hi John i do like the tighter view ....
But agree for more impact and a more balanced look i would go even tighter ....like Steve did with his RP .
You needed more DOF or even lesser than the OP , I think.
    Love that eye

Hi John - Good thinking here but yes, I too prefer the tighter crop and would want even more dof. ROT is Rule of Thirds and AFMA is Autofocus Microadjustment. Colors and tones look good here.

Really top tone and colour here, John. Detail is great also bearing in mind the limited DOF. I think this type of composition is always going to divide and also hard to do in a way that has wide appeal. Worth the experiment though and happy to see more experimenting like this.

    Hello John,

Apologies for coming in so late To answer your question above, I think Steve was referring to Rule of Thirds (RoT) and Autofocus Micro Adjustment (AFMA).

Fantastic detail on the eye of the subject, your experiments are paying off nicely! Nice textures, colours, and tonality is great. Lovely portrait and Steve's RP makes perfect sense, I am sure you agree.

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea
