Avian Hi, I am Juan - SW Florida

    Hi, new guy here.

I have been taking pictures for a few years now but recently got re-interested in bird photography after I moved to paradise (South West Florida...)
Now I am trying to improve my photography by seeing the picture, using better technique to capture the image as well as processing it into a pleasant image. Lots to learn.

I am using a Canon 7D II with a 100-400 mk II and sometimes a 1.4TC. I use it handheld most of the time but have a monopod and a tripod with an Acratech head. I process my images in Photoshop CS6 and a bunch of plugins. I usually resize for web using the script by Andreas Resch.

I went shooting at Fort Desoto recently with Arthur Morris and he pointed me in this direction. What I really like about BPN is the fact that there is some real feedback and honest critique, instead of the dozen "great image" that you get at some of the other sites. Please, be brutal

I will start with this image that I captured at Little Estero with the above mentioned setup. My questions here would be:
1- More space towards he top?
2- He has some sand in the feathers. To me it looks ok since he was in the beach... is this ok or does it distract?

    Thanks!

    Juan,

I love the image overall. It's very clean. Some may say that they would like to see a bit of canvas added to the top, but I think you have a wonderful composition the way it is here presented. I like the sand. I think it adds to his story. The one little splash/rock/bubble at the bottom right distracts me a bit. I'd be tempted to remove it from a super clean photo like that. Welcome to BPN! I was hoping to see you on here. Looking forward to seeing more from you.

    Your friend,

    Noel

Hi Juan, welcome to BPN!! As for your questions:

1- Yes, and all around as well
2- The sand is fine IMO.
