Young elephant coming up the hill, doing a good shake of the head. I like action in my photos, so like the extended ear, the dirt coming from the trunk, as well as the raised foot. Fading light in the Masai Mara.
Canon 1DXII and 400/f2.8II on a bean bag on the safari truck.
    f6.3, 1/2000, ISO1250.

Hi Greg -- What a cute moment and well timed image ! Liked the expression the elephant. Looks a bit tight all around especially at the foot and top of the frame. The subject especially its face lacks sharpness/details , those typical elephant textures looks smooth to my eyes. I might increase the clarity and also open up the shadows on the elephant slightly. There is a bit of magenta creeping in the hide as well. Also the placement of your copyright info is hindering the image IMO.

Really liked the moment here , TFS !

Hi Greg - What a fun image! I like the pose with the raised leg and the ear up. I agree it is a bit tight especially below and above but it looks like if you have more room above it will be sky (as seen in the urc). I wish the top edge as posted was grass all the way across. It's not a magenta cast but the reds are a bit strong and the wb fairly warm. Was the light that warm? Did you adjust the set/adjust the WB in pp? I think the texture is there, maybe just a little more sharpening.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Greg, this is a great moment captured with leg raised and ear flaps up, plus a bit of dirt dropping from the trunk. I think a tight crop works with this shot but probably just a bit too tight here as noted by Haseeb and Rachel. Also agree image does look a touch soft but maybe just not enough sharpening after final size reduction? You have the RAW and will know whether it is sharp or not. Nice work and thanks for sharing.

Lovely shot the first impression I got was that the colour temperature was a little too high, I see others thought likewise. I guess you cropped tightly for a reason but if possible a little less cropping for me.

Endearing image of the youngster - well caught! Yes, a slightly more free crop and a touch more sharpening. Looks great to me!

Thanks all for the comments, greatly appreciated. I'll add a little on the color and composition. The color is what I remember. It was the end of the day, but was generally overcast, so the light was not warm. But I can go back and review, along with the sharpening. The crop was deliberate in this case for posting here. I had no more below, but a little band of brighter sky above, which I did not think helped in the composition. I can go back and look again given the comments and see whether darkening the top may have been another choice. But in any case for me the essence of this photo was the action of the ear, think and foot, so felt the tightish crop was good for illustrating those aspects.

Greg - I think what most of us are saying is that the image as posted is warmer than expected. What is your workflow for adjusting/setting the wb? Most of us shoot on AWB and then set it in post using the eyedropper on a neutral point in the image to at least get a starting point for WB and Tint. It also helps deal with any color bias of the manufacturer. Canon tends to skew red and yellow while Nikon skews to color tones.

What a fun pose indeed. I agree with the suggestions already offered. If you add back canvas above you could always fill in the sky (clone) if you are OK with that type of image manipulation. The image brought a smile to my face

Greg, this is a 'fun' image with good techs too. Agree on the above comments and I think with some simple tweaks this has the hallmarks of an excellent image. I'm away again, but Greg getting the colour and some more Tonal depth back in gives/provides a lot more guts to the image. Hard to tell on the laptop, but hope this may illustrate some of the thoughts.

Super special capture, Greg! If it were mine I would have it printed

Wonderful fun pose from this cutie and he stands out so well against that soft BG. Super techs and some nice detail too. I like Steve's RP in terms of colour.

Really enjoyed viewing... and I cannot stop smiling ( too cute for words!)

    Kind regards,
