Default cape buffalo in the Mara

I find buffalo hard to photograph given how dark they are, particularly if the light is strong. I came past this guy in the very soft light at the end of the day, and the Mara grass nicely fades to a creamy background.

I like the shallow DOF the nose eyes and horns look sharp and well detailed, maybe a tiny bit more DOF would have rendered the horn a bit more sharp. There is a small amount of blue in the buffalo if you remove it it shows a subtle difference and I think it helps, especially on his nose. I don't know if you used clarity or any other means of contrast in the fur but I think a little would help.

Thanks Jonathan, I'll go back and look at the color - I suspect I did some clarity, although I am normally gentle with it.

Greg, the contrast of the animal in this scene of pale tones and pale sky is excellent in my view. The colour in the sky is lovely as is the grass and the simple scene with nothing but these two elements (other than the buffalo). The tones on the buffalo do look a little flat although with the shallow DOF, it is less of a concern for me - especially as the animal does stand out so well against the environment. I feel the composition is a little tight although I don't know if you have much frame left to loosen the crop? I think this could look quite interesting with a smaller animal starkly standing out in a see of grass and sky.

Glenn, thanks for the comments. I agree with your concern about the crop, particularly at the bottom. I think I have cut the virtual hoofs. I tried, unsuccessfully, to add some canvas at the bottom, I should try again, I have been thinking about why my previous attempt didn't work.

Hi greg -- a nice looking subject amidst the savannah , nicely standing out against subtle colours of the grass. Nice suggestion by Jonathan as well , slight tweaks and it goes well . liked the sharpness and details in it . TFS !

Hi Greg nice encounter and the buff is looking great . Like the simplicity of this one and the raised checking head is priceless good for me. Color and tones are looking good to me , well there is always room to play and make it slightly different .
The " killer " is the missing FG ....sadly , no way to get this realistic with the virtual legs IMO .

    Dear Greg,

Wonderful encounter with this buffalo, love the pose and "attitude". Colours and tonality are great, nice HA, subject stands out beautifully against the smooth BG.

Image is very nicely processed! The only problem I see here is the lack of enough FG... Sorry to mention this issue as well

Thank you so much for sharing Greg, keep them coming please!

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea
