Another with my time with the Common Seals. The next time I photograph them, I have to get a faster SS, as Steve recommended. I think I am still afraid of using the higher ISO. With the birds, I had to crop more, than with the seals. And, cropping more obviously showed more noise. So I was in the frame of mind, that using a lower ISO was more beneficial when processing. With these seals, I don't have to crop as much, as they are larger subjects, and don't have to crop so much. I kinda liked this one, the tide was coming in, and the seal had to move, but waited to the last minute, before moving onto a higher rock.

Nice action with the water! In this situation I'd go to a faster shutter speed to really freeze the water, and if necessary a larger aperture, as long as your focus point is on the eye. As you say, higher ISO here probably isn't an issue.

Hi Will, I love everything thing about it, bar the SS. Using either of the 1DX's you have to think Histogram, ETTR and SS forgetting ISO.

    Hello Will,

I agree with the above, everything here works save for SS Love the pose from the seal and colours, nice framing. When are you going back there again? I would love to see more...

    Kind regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Hey Will you are doing well with the seals
Love the pose and the gorgeous splash of water ...well timed shot .
Crop and colors working well , for me again there is fine detail lost somewhere on the way and i think you can again give the 3/4 tones a bit more depth .
I would exclude the surroundings from sharpening by X % ....matter of taste .

Keep them coming , TFS Andreas

Will, I wasn't sure about this one when I first saw it and have been back a few times to look and ponder. For me, I think there is too much going on in the frame. The seal is almost less significant than the breaking wave. If the IQ didn't suffer too much, I'd be inclined to crop this more tightly so it made the seal more significant but still retained the drama of some water breaking around it. Just a thought though and don't know how well it would work without having the original RAW to play with.

Thanks Gabriela, Andreas and Glenn. I'll get back to them sometime Gabriela. I have to wait on the right conditions, with the tides, which have to be coming in. Also the sun, if it shines, will have to be behind me. If it don't shine, better for me. But, as soon as this happens, I'll be there, after all it is only 10 mins from my house. I'll have a look at a closer crop Glenn. Thanks again

Hi Will - I really like the overall look of this but agree about the detail on the seal. I might apply less sharpening to the water than the seal (maybe even some negative clarity on the wave). Looking forward to seeing more.

    Rachel
