Sandhill crane at Narcoose, FL at dusk. Canon 1V, 100-400, 1.4x, ISO 400 Fuji print film, 4000 ppi scan. I would like to print this at 20x30. Any ideas on reducing the grainy contrast of the background somewhat? Thank you very much for any help. Jim

Nice but way grainy... Not sure if you reduce grain in scan the same way that you remove noise from a digital image. Sharp with perfect framing and timing. I would darken the light area on the right shoulder to black but leave the shine on the bill.

Hi Jim. good shot! I ran it through Noise Ninja, reducing the USM to 0 and upping the noise reduction a bit. I erased the noise reduction on the bird, the splash and the grass in the air. It seems to have worked well on this small file. You may want to experiment with whatever noise reducing software (on the original file of course) that you choose to use in making your big print, because at that size, everything will show up.

    Hi Jim!

I have zero experience with scans ... but I felt the image as presented could be treated with some standard noise reduction applications. Hope you do not mind that I tried some on your image. I also toned down the wing patch as suggested by Artie. I also went a little further, as I saw some blue patches also in the wings. I believe the extra saturation occurred because of all the quick processing work on the small JPEG. That can easily be adjusted back to taste.

edit ... Dan beat me to it!!

Both re-posts are EXC but I prefer Brian's by a bit. Thanks to both of you for teaching me something!

This will look good printed big! May I suggest to crop the slim pink line at the top?

Something very different that works well, Jim. Plus, we have all increased our knowledge from others.
