    Default Sea Otter

I did not realize that Sea Otters are endangered until I checked the IUCN Red List. This was taken from a moving boat in Kenai Fjords N.P. near Seward, Alaska. Two sea otters were rolling in the water and playing.

Good and sharp well exposed, not an easy subject I suspect - always turning and twisting. Ideally I would have liked to see the other head but the one presented does look interesting with the squashed water.

    Dear Rachel,

Must admit I was also unaware that Sea Otters are endangered. Nice techs, overall a well composed and thoughtfully processed image, the colours look natural and good detail on the face of the subject.

I like the visible teeth, too. This chap looks a bit like a puppy to me, are those youngsters?

Always nice to see a different species and the behavioural aspect is a bonus. A cheerful, fun image I really enjoyed viewing - much appreciated, my friend!

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriela Plesea

Thanks Jon, Gabriela and Stu for the comments, much appreciated. Stu - it's orca predation and oil spills apparently that keep it at endangered now.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Rachel, a nice interaction captured here (do I detect a theme in your work?). Nice to see a different species but I imagine these otters are difficult to photograph in the way we might try for a 'killer' shot for a land-based animal where there is going to be more variety in possible foregrounds, backgrounds and POVs. I like your framing and composition here. The water looks an unsual colour to me but perhaps that's exactly how it was. I know ocean water can vary so widely in colour. The colours and tones on the otters look good to me and well rendered in your processing. The light looks like it was cooperative too - not too harsh. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Glenn. The color of the water is accurate. I think the color is affected by the glacial runoff/melting from the many glaciers in the area.

    Thanks again,
    Rachel

Ahhh. Funny you should say that Rachel. I was thinking after posting my initial response that the blue-green-gray milky look is something I've seen before in glacial lakes!

Hi Rachel -- must have been difficult to capture them from a moving boat but you have done quite well in getting them in the frame. Would have loved to see both of their heads but as presented it still works. I liked the crop as well . All in all a fine image and enjoyed seeing a different specie .

    TFS !
