When these females raise their chicks, they do so by forming a creche. It could be any number of adults. Never the males. I have seen one mother with 30 chicks swimming behind her, and on another extreme 10 mothers with 1 chick. I captured this one from the shoreline at my home town. They were perched on a small island, showing at low tide. I kinda thought it was cute, with all ducklings sleeping
Thanks for sharing this, Will. It reminds me of a similar scene I observed a few years back on an island off the Maine coast. Love the little fuzzy sleeping chicks.
A nice insight into the world of these ducks, Will. The little ones are cute for sure! Good DOF and colours here. The harsh light isn't ideal though with the strong shadows, as I'm sure you know. I'd be interested to see one in softer light if the opportunity arises. Thanks for sharing.
Interesting info about this species! Not a scene we see every day. Tough conditions, but you did best you could. Looks like all the adults are aware of your passing by, and the chicks simply don't care
