A comical shot Michael. Good light and detail.

Hi Michael, agree with Colin, when they do this it is comical, but all they are doing is getting/acquiring focus as the 'bob' their heads.

If you could have upped the ISO then I feel you wanted more DoF, personally I think it's too shallow, likewise any slight movement at 1/200 may not have given you a pin sharp image. The NR or Blurring of the BKG looks a bit too hefty I think, perhaps try a lesser amount which in turn may help when trying to mask around the subject, there is then more transition IMHO. Any more below?

Hi Steve, I agree with everything you said. As the week went on, I figured a lot of this stuff out, but the only time the birds gave us this look with the eyes, was the first morning, for around 10 minutes, and I wasn't ready with my camera settings. oh well, hopefully I will make it down there again some day.

My personal taste suggests, that this is a tad bright as presented? I am thinking with no sun visible in the pupil - and the pupil is so large (meaning there was probably not much light). Maybe it would just appeal to me more about 1/3 or 2/3 of a stop darker.

I try to always be ready to shoot as soon as I get the camera out of the car. ISO, SS all set straight away and aiming for fastest possible shutter speed and as much DOF as possible. Though for me SS is king over DOF.

I love the pose and low angle. Well done.

Love the head angle and the low angle, the pose and the BG, shame about the shutter speed, I think the masking of the BG has bled a bit in the owl, that's why the DOF looks a bit funky, should be an easy fix. I think you feathered the mask too much
