    Default It's Not a Tumor!

My wife and I paid a visit to La Jolla in January to photograph the California Brown Pelicans. As we were getting out of the car we ran into Artie Morris and Patrick Sparkman, who had just finished a workshop there and were doing a little photography of their own. Did you know that pelican's pouch can hold over 3 gallons of water? It is an essential tool for pelicans when they fish, functioning like a fishing net. It follows that a healthy pouch is critically important for a pelican's survival, and they perform a number of maneuvers to keep the pouch supple. Here a Brown Pelican everts its pouch to give it a good stretch.

Such a cool and unique pose set off against a very nice background. Something about the yellow on the head seems a little off to me. Maybe its not tack sharp? Maybe a bit too bright? Sorry but I can't put a finger on it.

Cool pose! Neat how they push up with their necks from underneath. I imagine you named this fella Ah-nold...

Thanks for the feedback Isaac. The colors are faithful to the way a breeding-plumage California Brown Pelican looks; they are much prettier than the Brown Pelicans everywhere else. Here's a 100% RAW file crop.

Hi Doug, thats a very cool behavioural capture, and well timed, as they probably dont do this all day. I like the 'show off' pose, overall tack sharp, and against a pastel blue BG.
