    Default Rock Ptarmigan

Still slogging my way through day 1 of Iceland picture. Only 13 more days to review!
    Canon 1DX 600 mm and 1.4 x
    ISO 1250 SS 1/2000 F 5.6
Had to add canvas in front of ptarmigan.
These birds make the greatest guttural "craaauuuk "when they take -off. Very funny and you can hear it at this link www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Rock_Ptarmigan/sounds
These guys turn completely white by winter. Ann P.was talking to a fellow from Iceland who told her these birds are hunted during winter and each family is allowed 12 per year. I guess this ptarmigan becomes the Christmas turkey "a la icelandic"!
Comments and critiques always learned from and apprecuated with thanks,

Gail, nice looking bird with nice color, HA, BG, details and wing position, I'm not sure about the position in the frame though, maybe a bit higher?

Well Gail, if the next 13 days are anything like this image, you have a lot of winners. Just love the flight pose and that HA. I don't mind the placement in the frame, the BG, I think, fits nicely with the bird in that position. The open bill takes it up a notch. We have ptarmigan in Scotland, but still to photograph them. If I ever get an image like this I would be happy.

Now I'm really jealous!! What a beautiful looking flight pose with a great HA, open beak, and the perfect wing position. Many grouse species make a call as they take off to alert the others.
One or my favorite bird species and I have been trying for years to get good flight images of any Grouse species I come across.
The IQ looks great too. I like the file name you used but I find this one still a little dark on the head also. I also think the bird could be a higher in the frame .
Here is a repost with the comp adjusted a bit tighter and the head lightened. Hope you don't mind. You will obviously get better results starting from scratch. Great work!!

Quick draw you have! terrific in flight of my first ptarmigan. It surely was a wonderful shoot that day and what a surprise when the loud croak began lift-off. Hmm, should we have puffin or grouse? Looking forward to more Gail!

Great flight image of a bird i have never even seen. I think the tighter one looks better but it's a personal opinion. The IQ is amazing.

Gail, excellent repost. I really like the subtle change you did to the tonality.

Gail this is super I like them all but the repost is a tad better. If this is anything to go by we are in for a real treat with the next 13 days submissions!

Beautiful shot Gail, all the little variations work in their own ways, but the key thing is the staring image is so strong with the full downstroke and calling pose.

Hi Gail, lovely forward wing position, and you nailed the HA in flight, and with the calling open beak. Good detail throughout, and I would have left the subject as is, as he does seem to be flying upwards

    Great repost.
