This unusually cooperative Great Spangled Frittilary was foraging on thistle flowers. Sort of a butterfly in habitat shot. Canon 1DX II, 100mm macro. 1/200, f/11, ISO 320, KX-800 macro twin lite (diffused) as main light, hand held. Cropped for comp and NR on the background.
Love the butterfly and thistle - just like "ours" !! Details, plane of focus and DOF couldn't be much better.
The flash fall off is apparent and depending on your viewpoint this is OK or not quite so OK. I would be tempted to lift the dark background a little (TK mask works well) and or consider reducing contrast in the background.
Hi Steve and wow you really did find a cooperative butterfly with that nice open wing look! I like this as is - the butterfly really pops as John states. Nicely composed with the habitat. Well done.
