Taken at Sawgrass Lake Park, Pinellas Park.

Harsh light, less than ideal head angle (but almost there), no time (another engagement to go to), and one and only photo op with this species. This is what I was dealing with for this image. I was at the furthest I could be before being knee-deep in mucky, sinking muddy waters to try to get a better head angle on this motionless bird (and without compromising the nice BG). I am still very satisfied with the result of this full-frame image. Had to work on the eye as the nictating membrane was covering half of it. Despite being ridiculously cooperative this guy gave me the biggest challenge of my Florida trip:o:)

    Canon 40D + 100-400L @330mm, manual, 1/1600s., f/7.1, ISO 640 (dont' ask?), no EC, fill @-0.7 FEC, handheld.

I like the composition, pose and details. Maybe a bit less contrast as the blacks in the neck area are blocked.

Excellent self critique but I think that darkening the pupil and lightening and brightening the red iris would improve the image's impact quite a bit. Love the BKGR and the far-wing detail.
