Hi Lance - Good to see you posting and that you got it sorted. I think I have seen this one before but it still packs an impact. The low pov is great and the conversion works extremely well. This is also one where the centered comp works for me.

Don't forget to add your thoughts on other people's images. We recommend commenting on 3-5 other wildlife images each time you post one of your own (and when your internet connection in the bush permits). It helps foster a sense of community and let's us all get to know and learn from each other.

    Looking forward to more.

    TFS,
    Rachel

Hi Lance, good to see the MK3 still delivering and the image brings back fond memories.

The rather 'gritty' conversion works well and provides a strong and bold image and is more about pure B/W rather than fine detail & sharpness. The low POV always adds to the capture IMHO and engages with the viewer well. Retaining a slightly 'mottled' backdrop works, solid black I feel would have been to severe & harsh. Personally I might have smoothed out the FG so there wasn't any 'visible' grain, but just a thought. At 1/125 you needed to be super steady, however you could not really push the ISO on this body.

Thanks very much Steve. Unfortunately the mk3 is now dead and replaced (sorry )

It certainly wasn't a smooth sailing easy image, specially shooting at 910mm (500mm on 1.3 crop + 1.4 tele) and the MK3s not so pretty high ISO i was a little limited for my settings.....lucky I had a nice rock to rest on for the low angle to keep the shot steady.

My first conversion of this was to a simple B&W, however with the low angle shooting and huge focal length, there was no real detail in the foreground and background to preserve and bolder, in the occasion, to me looked better :D

Also, its so nice to be on forums again :D :D

What have you replaced it with, please don't say the 7D2 as you'll be back to square one again with ISO?

there was no real detail in the foreground and background to preserve
You didn't need any Lance, as the focal point is the subject and so having no distracting elements has worked well.

Even worse......5DSr as main camera and 7dmk2 as backup
(I shoot interiors as well hence 5dsr, but also 50mg files are incredible if your technique is good)

I would love to upgrade to a 1dxmk2 and main, 5dmk4 backup and keep the 5DSr for interiors :D

Sound thoughts. Yep seen and processed 5DSr files, but I feel the fps is not suited for Wildlife . As and when you do get a 5DIV, from the four we played with, you will (IMHO) need to 'tweak' the AF as all four were out by the same amount.

Awesome capture Lance, superb POV and the conversion just works!

Love the contrast and this almost metallic look of the frame appeals to me tremendously. You have managed to portray the subject in a way that arouses awe and respect for the species. All in all a successful frame that draws out features capable of exciting a sense of beauty as well as interest in the viewer, congratulations

    Kind regards,

No the 5DSr is useless for wildlife haha any type of action it is way to slow and buffer is way to small!

Interesting about the 5d4....i will hopefully find out one day :D

    Thanks Dumay

Karongwe, Selati, Makuleke were the main areas I did my training.

I just finished at Tswalu Kalahri, now working as a private photographic guide....so nowhere and everywhere :D

Hi lance...Thanks for the response. Sounds like you did your training through Eco training. I am in Lion Sands KNP now was in the Sand's for 3 years. Who are you doing Photographic safaris for?

No worries! It sounds like I was at Sabi Sabi when you were in the sands! We most likely saw each other at Skukuza airport from time to time!

At this stage I am working under my own name with past clientele and in the process of trying to get some good agents behind me as well which will be a huge help!

The MORE brand is stunning and id love to see lion sands at some stage. A good friend of mine who was on my ecotraining course with me is starting now (I believe in the sands.....) Luke Abbot
