Default Tracking sensitivity and min ss for a very close subject coming towards photographer

Guys,I'm in an incredibly fortunate position at this time with some baby brown hares, leverets. I seem to have struck up a bit of a bond with a couple especially, leastways they are showing very little fear if I keep my fieldcraft good often coming as close as a meter(yard or so) away ,all but checking me out.. I want to try and get one coming towards me frame filling in portrait, but i'm not quite nailing the shot to my satisfaction. It's one that i'm getting chances at fairly regularly, bless them.

I thought it might be wise to just check my techs with you far more experienced photographers and ask especially for a min SS and also where my tacking sensitivity should be set. They are not moving particularly fast, that said the kids are highly strung and can move incredibly erratically.

I am using a 1Div AI servo continuous BB focus my tracking sensitivity is set to -1 to hold onto the subject being tracked . This is my first concern that with this senario it should maybe be set to a plus figure to track faster? The SS is almost always a fight for light senario here in the UK unless the light is really bright which oft goes hand in hand with harsh here. So I'd really like a min Ss as a ball park so I can work from there. I am often using a 1.4 extii, but things are so good at the moment I'm going to stick to the bare lens for a while now and see how I get on. They can be curious little animals if that fear barrier is not in play it is getting to the stage now where 420mm is simply too much reach. I have one lens 300f2.8is . Almost all shots are lying down HH shot of elbows, tripods not an option if I had something adequate,it still wouldn't be feasable in this situation

I feel beyond my personal inabilities , ie pilot error, I need to rule these two possible things out as the reason for the images not being as sharp as I want. In an ideal world I'd like to be somewhere around f9 or more they can be so close that even this isn't really enough. i'm pushing my iso up to around the 5000 mark( i'm not really confident enough yet to go much further with the iv ( concerns over IQ and I can only process in DPP4 at this time) to try and keep SS as high as possible. But oft with the dof set to around 9 my SS is around the 1250 mark which I feel is inpart my problem. So am reasoning if I have a base min SS set iso as high as poss then the f will land where is does in given light on a given day. The hares /leverets tend to be most active in the evenings and sadly are often in shade due to the lie of the land.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts and all the fantastic help and advice this forum has given me so far.

    take care

    Hio Stu,

Tracking sensitivity has nothing to do with tracking speed, it is basically re-focus delay, i.e. how long the camera waits once it thinks it has lost focus before it tries to focus on something else. you need to set it to -2 for erratic subjects too reduce AF twitchiness.

Buddy seriously, thanks for the reply on this one and for taking your time to further my understanding. Arash could you please spot me a rough minimum SS for the above senario, maybe that isn't possible from my description ,but no harm in asking

have a wonderful weekend or even break if you get the extra day Arash cheers for the help
